How a 16 team bracket works

Four rounds
The round of 16 (8 games), the quarter-finals (4), the semi-finals (2) and the final: 15 games, no byes.
Seeding
Every first-round pair adds up to 17: 1 v 16, 8 v 9, 4 v 13 and so on. Seeds 1 and 2 are in opposite halves, and seeds 1 to 4 each start in a different quarter.
Familiar from March Madness
Each of the four regions of the NCAA basketball tournaments is a 16-team bracket seeded the same way, so the first-round games will look familiar.

First round, top to bottom

Questions

How many games are in a 16 team bracket?

Fifteen in single elimination, one fewer than the teams: 8, then 4, then 2, then the final. Double elimination takes 30 games, or 31 with a grand final reset.

How many rounds does a 16 team bracket have?

Four in single elimination. In double elimination there are four winners rounds, six losers rounds and the grand final.

What is the standard 16 team seeding?

1 v 16, 8 v 9, 4 v 13, 5 v 12, 2 v 15, 7 v 10, 3 v 14 and 6 v 11. The pairs add up to 17, and seeds 1 to 4 each start in a different quarter of the bracket.

Do I need exactly 16 teams?

No. With 9 to 15 teams the bracket is still 16 spots wide and the top seeds get byes. With 12 teams, for example, seeds 1 to 4 skip the first round.

How do I print a 16 team bracket on one page?

Press Print a blank bracket. It prints landscape with compact boxes so all four rounds fit on one page, with the seeds filled in and the name lines empty.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It’s free and needs no account. The bracket is made in your browser and the names you type are not sent anywhere; this browser keeps your bracket so a reload doesn’t lose it.
