Fit the count
Compare the head count with the venue and the budget. Move whoever you’d invite only if there’s room to the B list, and watch the A list count.
Invite and track replies
Add the emails you have and send the save the dates, then the invitations. Once the replies are in, make the seating chart.

Questions

How do we start a wedding guest list?

Each of you, and each set of parents if they are helping to pay, writes down everyone they would invite. Put the lists together under a side each, take out the doubles, and count. If the count is over what the budget or the venue allows, move people to the B list rather than deleting them.

What is an A list and a B list?

The A list is everyone you invite first. The B list is people you would like there if there is room. Send the A list invitations early, and as declines come in, invite from the B list in order, while the reply date still gives them a fair few weeks.

How many guests will actually come?

Usually 75 to 85 percent of those invited say yes, fewer for a destination wedding or a holiday weekend, more when most guests live nearby. Plan the budget and the venue for the full A list anyway: you can’t count on declines.

Who gets a plus-one?

A common rule: married, engaged and long-term couples are invited together by name, and the wedding party gets a plus-one. Beyond that it is up to you and the budget. Write +1 after a name here so the head count includes them.

What should a guest list template include?

One row per guest with the invitation they belong to, first and last name, whether they are a child, their plus-ones, the side, an email and which list. The download here has those columns, and it is the format The Details reads, so the list can become your wedding website’s guest list without retyping.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It’s free and needs no account. The names stay in your browser and aren’t sent anywhere; this browser keeps the list for next time. Download the CSV to keep a copy or open it in Excel or Google Sheets.
